Fugitive Captured After Months in Hiding, Two Arrested for Harboring Him

Police have apprehended a 31-year-old man who had been evading authorities since last October. The suspect, identified as Ronald Balgobin, a taxi driver from Linden, was discovered hiding under a bed during a search operation in Lot 1, Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara, over the weekend.

Balgobin was wanted in connection with the alleged abduction of Basmattie ‘Penny’ Bassant, a 37-year-old housewife from Annandale, East Coast Demerara, on October 27, 2024. Alongside Balgobin, two individuals were also taken into custody for allegedly harboring the fugitive.

The arrest followed a wanted bulletin issued last week by the Guyana Police Force, which has been actively investigating Bassant’s abduction. Authorities have not yet released further details about the case but confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.

Balgobin’s capture marks a significant breakthrough in the case, which has drawn public attention since Bassant’s disappearance last year. The two individuals arrested for harboring him are expected to face charges related to aiding and abetting a fugitive.

As the investigation continues, the police have urged anyone with additional information to come forward to assist in bringing the case to a resolution.
