Antigua and Barbuda Unveils Digital Overhaul to Streamline Tourism and Border Entry

The government of Antigua and Barbuda has announced a sweeping digital transformation initiative aimed at modernizing its tourism infrastructure, with plans to replace paper-based immigration forms with an electronic arrival system. The move, designed to enhance efficiency and sustainability, underscores the twin-island nation’s push to solidify its status as a leading Caribbean travel destination.

E-Arrival System to Replace Paper Forms
During a recent radio interview, Charles Fernandez, Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation, and Investment, revealed that travelers entering Antigua and Barbuda will soon use a digital platform to complete immigration processes via smartphones or devices. The system, part of the broader “Arrive Antigua” initiative, aims to eliminate lengthy paper forms and reduce airport queues.

“We’re aligning with global trends to offer visitors a seamless experience,” Fernandez said. “This will significantly speed up entry and reflect our commitment to innovation.” While no specific timeline was provided, officials emphasized that the transition is a priority, particularly after the country welcomed a record 1.2 million visitors in 2024—a 17% surge from the previous year.

Competitive Edge in a Booming Tourism Market
Antigua and Barbuda’s tourism sector, a cornerstone of its economy, has rebounded robustly post-pandemic. The digital overhaul is seen as critical to maintaining competitiveness. “Embracing technology ensures we remain a top choice for travelers,” Fernandez added, noting that the upgrades will enhance both efficiency and visitor satisfaction.

Chief Immigration Officer Katrina Yearwood, who spearheads the initiative, highlighted additional benefits, including environmental sustainability. “Moving away from triplicate paper forms reduces waste and streamlines operations,” she said. The “Arrive Antigua” platform will feature QR codes and dedicated airport Wi-Fi to facilitate real-time data submission.

Broader Digital Transformation and Security Upgrades
The e-arrival system is one facet of a wider digital strategy. In January 2025, the Immigration Department announced expanded digital services to address security challenges and improve public communication. Plans include modernized border entry systems and phased elimination of paper embarkation/disembarkation cards.

Three firms recently presented proposals to key stakeholders—including Customs, Immigration, and tourism officials—during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Gaston Browne. The proposals focus on integrating advanced technology to bolster security and user experience.

A Sustainable, Tech-Driven Future
The shift to paperless processes aligns with global sustainability goals while catering to tech-savvy travelers. “Everything is electronic now,” Yearwood said. “This isn’t just about efficiency—it’s about positioning Antigua and Barbuda as a forward-thinking destination.”

As the nation races to implement these changes, the government remains steadfast in its vision: to merge cutting-edge technology with the pristine allure of its beaches, ensuring Antigua and Barbuda remains a jewel of the Caribbean.
